Whether or not you have ever personally experienced the excitement and fulfillment associated with community service, it is never too late to take it up a notch. Contemporary community service organizations offer to interested individuals the opportunity to service a community through their actions. Ranging from a simple project like a daycare service for young women professionals and their infants, to a more complex one like building the local school facilities of a village in Eastern Africa, community services are part of a global effort to assist another group of people by offering experts advice and the required set of skills. But community service, apart from it being an alternative sentencing...

The pharmaceutical industry has long been a financial contributor to CME courses. Over the years, drug makers' money and marketing materials has caused a conflict of interest concerns. There are newly published guidelines that state that dictate that no more than 25% of physician organizations' budgets should come from the drug industry. There are already reports that some organizations, like The American Psychiatric Association, have pledged to eliminate any bias by not accepting funds from pharmaceutical companies for their CME courses and programs. Physician organizations have become increasingly weary of the conflict of interest concerns. The actions of the panel of experts shows a desire to...

All Character Education activities need to be planned to build a comprehensive program in the school environment. Several ideas need to be infused to help bring the lessons to life, and ensure that all aspects of the school environment support such programs. Let's take a few ideas. Infusing Character education A very effective way of delivering moral and ethical values is through infusing character education messages. Teachers should read stories about people of strong character to students. They should also ask them to write response journals or debate the sides of a controversial science issue, using the virtues to guide their arguments. Character education programs in schools Programs and...

Often, the simple reason for not accomplishing all that you set your mind to, is because not enough of your mind is set to it. It's a little test called the Education versus Entertainment Ratio.it requires a clean piece of paper and something to write with. You may not be aware of some of them as "entertainment", but be honest with yourself here, because not being honest won't help you achieve your highest dreams. Anything you do, that is for your pleasure and "down time", relaxation time...goes on this list. Things like:television, movies, computer games...

First let me state I am not a doctor, nor do I have any formal medical training. I do have high blood pressure and after doing some research, I am writing this article to point out reasons why you should monitor your blood pressure at home. Check with your doctor before you take it upon yourself to perform home blood pressure monitoring. Most people have their blood pressure taken at their visits to their doctors. With the loss of jobs and high costs of health insurance a lot of people are forced to forgo these visits. Years ago my mother went through knee replacement surgery. I was working as a preschool assistant teacher and running back and forth checking my mom throughout the day and then back...

How a UK based Physiotherapist, Jayne Davies, has helped headache and migraine sufferers using the ‘Watson Headache Approach’. Physiotherapist Jayne Davies finds it frustrating that physiotherapy for headaches does not get the publicity it deserves. Ms Davies works in both the NHS and privately, and has trained in a variety of techniques for treating headaches. She says a breakthrough only occurred in her work after taking Dean Watson’s course, and she is now an assistant teacher on the UK courses. “It’s quite amazing. I’ve had a lot of patients who have had migraines for years and they have gone completely after using Dean Watson’s treatment, although this doesn’t happen for...

Everyone knows that it is not the best time to be looking for jobs, but we all still need them. We all need to support ourselves whether it be part-time, full-time, or even subbing for a school. The problem is, no one ever talks to you about the skills you need to be able to get that job. So here are 3 things that we think will help you land your next teaching job. #1. Confidence. Confidence is one of the most important factors when getting a teaching job. Not only will this help you when you are at the interview, but you will feel better when teaching...

What is it about math that causes such pain and anxiety, turmoil and fighting, tears and anger? Is it math or is it the method that we employ to teach math to our children? Personally, I don't think it is math. People have been learning math for hundreds of year. Math anxiety is a recent phenomenon, like in the last 50 years. We're into the second generation of math anxiety. So let's look at the method we use to teach math. I have found that the standard approach to teaching math today is equivalent to teaching reading by first studying grammar, spelling and phonetic before you ever read a story. If we did this to teach reading, no one would ever want to learn how to read. So why do we teach math...

Public-School Excuse #1 - Give Us More Money!

If more money meant better education for our kids, our public schools should have vastly improved over the last 75 years. Yet the reverse is true. In dollars adjusted for inflation, public schools spent about $876 per year for elementary and secondary school students in 1930, when student literacy rates were close to 90 percent. In contrast, in 2003 public schools spent about $7500 per student, while literacy rates fell to the 50-70 percent level in many public schools. In the year 2000, the five states whose students got the highest SAT scores were North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Yet, per-pupil spending in North Dakota ranked forty-first among the states, in Iowa twenty...

Bingo is an increasingly popular classroom activity with many teachers. This is because these teachers realize that as well as being a lot of fun for their students, the game is perfectly suited to educational use, including in the K-12 environment. This is because bingo is very easy to learn and play, highly flexible and adaptable to different topics and subjects, and importantly given the financial constraints that many teachers work under, not requiring of specialist expensive resources or materials. Although bingo can be used in teaching many different subjects and topics, including math and arithmetic, telling the time, or even geography, history or science, one area in which the game is...

Synthetic Phonics - Everything You Need to Know...

If you would like to help your child learn to read, but are overwhelmed by all the educational terminology, this may help. Most parents understand the concept of phonics - the correlation of one sound to one or more letters. For example: the letters 'c' 'k' and 'ck' all make the [k] sound. However, there are two types of phonics: Synthetic Phonics and Analytical Phonics. Synthetic Phonics is the concept of teaching reading by first teaching one letter corresponding to one sound, without teaching all the exceptions and complications, then blending those sounds together in words. Analytical Phonics (aka Implicit Phonics or Whole Word) does the opposite. It moves from the whole word to the parts. This...

Recently it came to my notice that Physical Therapist Dr. Glenn Dorman has celebrated his ninetieth birthday. His book, "How to Teach Your Baby to Read," co-athored with Janet Dorman over forty years ago, started a whole new approach to teaching reading to the very young. It all began while Glenn Dorman was teaching brain damaged preschool children to read at Philadelphia's Institutes for Achievement of Human Potential. Dolman claims that a baby will learn the written word as easily as spoken language and can even learn to read before he or she learns to speak. .That is on the basis that the written word is presented repeatedly and in large letters. His book sets out step-by-step teaching sessions...

These days, teaching reading is the job of ALL teachers regardless of the subject area or grade level. The fact is if you want your students to do well they MUST be able to comprehend the material they are reading...whether it is in science class, social studies, or even math. Teaching reading is no longer just the job of the language arts teacher. However, if you really want to improve reading comprehension you're going to need a couple of "tricks" up your sleeve. One "trick" teachers can use to improve reading comprehension is by using a strategy know as purpose setting. Purpose setting is just as it sounds...the teacher helps the students set a purpose for the reading. Setting a purpose for...

The phonic approach to the teaching of reading has been used for centuries. In the 19th century. The approach was named 'phonics'. Since this time it has been developed and modified to what we have today. Today, a phonics approach is used to varying degrees, in most reading methods. A phonic approach to reading is an which teaches the relationship between the sounds of the letters and their written form. It is a form of de-coding. The words can be de-coded by learning what the letters say. The phonic approach is based on two assumptions. One is that the sound or phoneme of a letter has a correlation to the letter or graphemes. The second is that once children have learned the relationship between...

Experiential learning cycles treat the learners subjective experience as of critical importance in the learning process. Experiential learning cycles (ELC) draw on experiential education principles, which are largely based on the educational philosophy of John Dewey (James 2004). Several models of ELC are currently available ranging from a one step model to a nine-step model, just as with any new teaching model educators must research and find which one works best for which situation. In addition to the set models the great thing about experiential learning...

The focus of the constructivist theory is on the process of constructing learning and the understanding through active engagement or communication of the learners.  Essentially, constructivists put the means of learning in the control of the learner (Ormrod, 2008).  The theory is based on Piaget's research related to the way learning takes place.  He believed that reality is not absolute, and human beings construct knowledge based on their perceptions of the world (Fosnot, 1996).  Other theorists that contributed to the current constructivist view include Lev Vygotsky, Jerome Bruner, Howard Gardner, and Nelson Goodman.   Overall, the theorists believed that the constructivist theory of learning...

Easy, Effective Evangelism Structures In Evangelism, why do I say 'Structures' are so important? In fact what do mean by the term 'Structures'? One aspect that The Macquarie Dictionary states structures are is "a complex system considered from the point of view of the whole rather than of any single part". I believe we often have lots of 'single parts' with no 'system' we can view as a whole. I believe 'Evangelism Structures' consist of three distinct components. These are 'Plans', 'Vehicles' and 'Tools'. Plans give clear direction and consist of Desires and Goals. Plans come from us through prayer and obedience. Desires are things we would love too see happen, but have no control over. An example...

Three Golden Rules for motivating disaffected learners These are the three Golden Rules for motivating students – the foundations for getting through to disaffected learners. If your answer to any of these questions is ‘no’ – don’t worry – you’re not alone. But experience tells us that if you are willing to apply these principles to your teaching, you will see your students’ motivation increase significantly. 1. Do you Test and Measure every aspect of your lessons? Being outstanding at teaching disaffected learners is actually fairly straightforward – but so few teachers do it. You just need to continually test and adapt new teaching strategies on a small scale. It may be a new...

I took a landscaping class recently. During that class the professor discussed the invaluable need to understand the nature of plants and the necessity of enriching our habitat whenever possible. It was an enlightening experience because as it turns out, teaching and landscaping have a lot in common. Like plants, each child in our charge comes with a unique history, a unique set of abilities, and a unique personality. Sometimes this combination makes it easy for a teacher to determine and develop a great long-term lesson plan. Other times, this combination challenges and frustrates teachers, administrators, and parents alike. It is the "go the extra mile" challenge, the challenge to reach the needs...

In recent years a debate has developed over which approaches to structuring, planning and implementing lessons are more effective. Theorists and practitioners are constantly arguing about how language acquisition takes place and how best to facilitate this. Many approaches and methods have been developed which have had a substantial impact on language teaching, although a lot of these procedures are rarely exclusively used in the classroom. The approaches adopted in the classroom are usually determined by the students' needs, goals, and learning styles. For example, a beginner may have an immediate need for communicating basic needs of everyday life. For that student, a communicative approach may be...

Children in society today are less likely to think highly of themselves due to lack of self-esteem, lack of knowledge, and lack of discipline. These children are seen everyday in today's society. In order for these children to avoid feeling inadequate, they must be seen and heard in order to gain approval. Let's face it, every child needs a mentor, but especially the bi-lingual student. The persistence of the U.S. achievement gap is especially problematic when we realize that current statistics likely underestimate the problem. The problem persists because of a failure in the system to provide much more than cookie-cutter instructional responses that do not address youth's literacy needs. Programs that exacerbate youth's negative identity constructions abound, and Terrance's story tells us that there are more positive alternatives. When I ask why, the response is invariably the same: "I just don't understand writing, and English, and grammar, and all that stuff." For some reason, people seem to think that knowing "all that stuff" is necessary for learning to write well. Who knows all the rules, the meanings of all the terms, the linguistic foundations of writing strategies? Think about the people who have tried to teach you "all that stuff." You will probably recall high school English teachers. You might think about college English professors. They have English degrees. The conclusion, therefore...

There was a time, way back in the murky past, when understanding English Grammar was considered to be one of the fundamentals taught at schools in the English speaking world. For some reason, this has changed over the past few decades and a more holistic approach to literacy instruction has been advocated. However, even highly intelligent students now seem to struggle when it comes to the conventions of writing in English. Clearly, there are some things that just don't automatically happen via exposure to language and texts. There are still some basic elements of language learning, including those pesky Grammar rules, which must be actively taught. In fact, it is somewhat misleading to refer to...
